Pathophysiology Course Overhaul (Melanoma)

An online pathophysiology course had existed in the same form for over a decade. The professor wanted to make large-scale changes across the course to enhance engagement. She requested videos to reduce the amount of text and interactive activities to keep students excited about the learning. A module within the course focusing on melanoma was selected as the first module to receive this overhaul. Other modules have since been revised. Using Articulate Storyline, a branched activity allowed students to navigate through the content. A consult note appearing at the beginning attempted to mimic the clinical environment. Videos were embedded into the Storyline file. Below are some example videos as well as screenshots of the product.

In the course, learners are first given option to look at the case or review the consult notes.

A consult note is meant to mimic the clinical environment.

Learners are given ability to navigate through the case. After each tab has been visited, they are sent to the Application Activity.

Comprehension checks appear throughout the course to test students’ learning of the material.

At the end, students engage with an application activity in which they devise a plan of action, utilizing the information throughout the module.
